Element Does Not Indicate Its Current State

Short Description

Active state is only indicated visually with no indication to screen reader software

Long Description

  • Active versus inactive states are indicated in elements such as tab, menu item, and radio button.
  • Active state might be indicated with highlighting, or underline, neither of which screen reader software typically indicates to a user.
  • A computer can understand programmatic information, whereas it cannot understand visual information such as a highlight. The current state of an element needs to be in the programmatic information.

Example of Issue

Example of play/stop control that does not indicate current state

Recommendations

  • ARIA is one way to indicate the current state of an element. However, incorrect use of ARIA can make content even less accessible, so make sure to use it properly.
